Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Carved Carnelian & Marcasite Pendant Necklace
This antique Edwardian Era necklace is an elegant combination of carved carnelian cabochons, graceful milgrained silver rose ornaments and dozens of glittering marcasites, all suspended from the original, sterling silver paper-clip and ring chain. Grand, sumptuous and suitable for formal/evening wear, the necklace’s central pendant is pierce-carved in a beautiful, artfully stylized vignette of a bird in a lush field of leaves and flowers, the two side pendants echo the theme with overall floral-and-foliate carving, and the four fleur-de-lis connecting ornaments have lovely rose-and-leaf designs with C-scrolls on all four sides. The combination of milgraining on all surfaces and the dense scattering of bright, highly reflective marcasites draw the eye and balance the rich, earthy orange tones of the carnelian, and the necklace is in excellent condition, marked and tests positive for sterling silver, measures 16 1/2-inches long and weighs 23.2 grams. Probably Chinese in origin, the central pendant measures 1 11/16 x 1 1/4-inches, and the side pendants measure 1 5/16 x 1 1/16-inches.
