RARE ANTIQUE GENUINE ROMAN LION & BUST INTAGLIO 22K GOLD SIGNET RING

Description

An incredible genuine ancient Roman seal set into an antique, 18th century or older signet ring in solid 22 carat gold – a translucent orange-red natural carnelian intaglio depicting a lion in front of a statue or offering.
The lion was the ancient symbol of Rome, associated with strength and skill, so this piece was probably given to signify the thanks of Rome or represent a high status subject of Rome. It has the patina of 2000 years etched into its surface and has that ‘otherworldly’ feel of genuinely ancient jewellery, when they did things quite differently to how we know them now.
The seal lost a corner at some point early in its history, which was then filled with gold when it was fitted to this ring. There’s also a very old resizing to the back of the band – these battle scars are features of a time-worn and genuine piece that enhance its character and help prove its authenticity, rather than negative issues. Overall a precious and valuable treasure that ought to be cherished for centuries to come! Size 7+, not resizable.
The seal dates from around AD300-500 and the ring from the 1700’s or older, it weighs 6.3 grams, and measures 11 mm across the head.
